Navy Beach, Montauk NY

Navy Beach, Montauk NY
Is it Miami?  Nope - it's Navy Beach in Montauk, NY
When we visited Montauk over the 4th of July, we wanted to catch some killer sunsets.  Let's just say that we weren't disappointed with what we found.

We had more than a few great recommendations from helpful cab drivers and retail managers, and one name that kept coming up was Navy Beach.  Was that a military outpost?  The name of a beach, perhaps?  Actually, it's the name of a fantastic restaurant that is not to be missed.

Navy Beach is a beach-side eatery that you have to see to believe.  It's Miami-chic, with couches that spill right down to the high-tide line, and food service is available inside and out.  The decor is wonderfully nautical, the clientele is trendy and 'beach-riche', and the entire place has a vibe that lets you know you've arrived.  If you ever thought the end of the world might just be a giant beach party, you were right.

The food was exceptional - an encomium I rarely give to a dining establishment - but given the bustle of the holiday weekend, the staff was mildly attentive and not speedy by any stretch of the imagination.  In addition, the First Mate and I had a spectacular table on the beach, but after several rounds of food we were unceremoniously ousted by Franklin, the self-proclaimed manager.  I thought this was poor hospitality at best, but at a place like this, I suppose the loss of a few customers comes unavoidably with a new tide of daily visitors.

Sunset at Navy Beach
Some of the best sunsets on the East Coast.
Hospitality issues aside, I'd still go back in a heartbeat, although at a less frantic time.  Bring your swimsuit if you want to take a dip in between daiquiris, or if you're planning to dinghy in from any one of the yachts that like to sit 100' offshore and come in to show off - I mean, to eat and drink.  (Hey, I'd do it too!).

For a fantastic night out with tasty culinary choices, great ambiance and killer sunsets, look no further than Navy Beach in Montauk - just make sure that you check with Franklin before settling in for too long!
